I recently was in a discussion with a few friends of mine about the role of nuclear arms now in modern time and how Barack Obama is working towards a major nuclear disarmament all around the world. To me nuclear weapons keep the peace if they are in the right hands. Everyone is afraid to bomb someone else with nuclear arms because who ever bombs someone could be bombed back. We also have enough nukes to blow up our entire Earth multiple times as do other countries around the world.
So after I presented my argument to my friends I asked them if they think this move towards total nuclear disarmament is good for the world. Two of my friends agreed that this was a great idea and it would help keep these weapons out of the hands of terrorist and the whole world would be moving towards global peace.
My theory is that the opposite would happen (besides the keeping it out of the hands of terrorist statement). Nuclear weapons use the fear of their use as balance for a sort of world peace. These weapons were never meant to be used but to intimidate. If we do not have these weapons to keep each other in check, then Empires and a new age of Imperialism could be a possibility. Wars would be more common, and instead of a massive movement towards peace we just end up taking two more steps away from it.
The way i see it, this could very well be a harmful thing for everyone and every nation on planet Earth and may take a turn for the worst.
